After a long 12 weeks of this Sprinter Van Conversion project, we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. If you can believe it... we move out of our AirBnB in just one more sleep so it was CRUCIAL that we got our indoor shower and composting toilet move-in ready. It's already hard to believe that we lived VAN LIFE for three years without a full bathroom... ah, the luxury!

How Did We Get Here?
Abandoning our Van in Africa
After an incredible 3 years of living, working, and traveling in our self converted Sprinter Van we made the very tough decision to abandon it in Africa to take a rescue flight back to Canada. As it has for all of us this global pandemic has flipped our world upside down. When our Prime Minister announced that he was sending repatriation flights over to Africa to pick up Canadians who were stuck (due to border closures) we consulted with friends and family closest to us and realized that in this time of crisis we should be back in our home country. Halting our dream of driving around the world was a hard pill to swallow which is why we knew we needed a big project to keep our mind + body busy while social distancing back here in Toronto. Enter building an off-grid tiny house on wheels!! This is going to be our 3rd time converting an empty cargo van into a campervan and we are both excited and nervous to take on this project. We want this build to be the ULTIMATE OFF-GRID VAN 🚐

  • Can you all believe that we are moving out of our AirBnB and into CasaB full-time?!? 😳. Still got a lot of work to do (re: electrical, solar) but feeling excited to call this new van our home. Where would you like to see us go first?! *keeping in mind it's likely got to be somewhere within Ontario* 😝

  • Love how you did the toilet and shower install, like to do something similar, but also add a "shower chair" and hand rails too that will be used for my elderly dad, for our near future road trip we'll be making eventually once we know when the City will do demolition of his old house and 2 story building in the back yard, these are in very poor bad shape, no way it can be fixed and renovated whatsoever, then a new house built after the demolition for my dad. In the meantime, I just got a newer van recently, because my previous van's transmission went out on it, and for the price of a new transmission and labor costs, I got this 5yr newer van, it's a bit bigger as in now I can stand up in it, my other one couldn't stand up inside. I've gone from a 95 GMC Vandura Conversion Van G2500 (full sized) to a 2000 GMC Savana full size van with a topper that has lots of storage, however I like to add an extended shelf like storage to them because the original cabinets are a bit smaller inside without taking out the original, take off the doors to them and reuse them, it's just to help with some minor space changes for better storage, the ones that are there now one the sides, the front and back storage is good, however again the ones on the sides have only from the back wall to the doors at this time 1-2", and just want to add maybe 4-6" more outwardly so to maybe make a bit more storage overhead room for like food, my dad's personal health care and hygiene stuff, etc. Haven't done anything yet with the conversion, but working on idealistic plans for start, I need to get new tools and supplies for the job will need to be done in near future. Awesome ideas from you both, I like them, even though I don't have a transit van, but the ideas I get and intergrade to work for my newer van may work I have now😊

  • Awesome Build. I have a list of things to get from FRworld ideas for my DIY van install. I used so much of this VLog its cover most of the things on my list. YAY! Including under cabinet shower. Wow! I had it in my floor plan so you've given me an excellent way to do it. I also plan to make the doors to provide an inset for legs to use the counter top as a desk with a fold out flat chair. You guys are so creative. Especially love the rattan cabinet doors. So functional and design savvy.

  • I think the toilet should be facing towards the front of car, and moved over more towards the door. Then you can just slide it out, over the entrance area, when you need to use it, and then slide it back. That way you won't have to pick up toilet and move it when you shower. Put wood top on hinge and waterproof underside, use hooks or something to keep it up when you shower. You should make a square shower curtain rod hanging from ceiling, over cabinet. (And water proof behind cabinet). When you don't use curtain, you can slide curtain back around to right, and tuck curtain next to sitting bench, (make a space there) so you don't have to hang it each time.

  • Just some thoughts...I'd say to put the counter on a hinge bracket with the push magnetic locking mechanisms between the counter and on the top of the side of the cabinet where the counter sits on. If you hit a bump that counter will slam real hard. You may want to add something to weigh down or hold the bottom of the shower curtain as well. Otherwise that will become a pain if you have a shower when it's windy and you still want the doors open. Looks amazing though!
